WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

"My name is Kate Hilgenberg and my son Bennett just had his last day of Drama Camp run by Jessica Genick. To say he loved the week experience would be an understatement...but the amount of emoticons I would have to use to express how he has been talking about it would probably make me lose all credibility, so lets stick with LOVE! read more

I met Jessica at a camp fair I attended to look into options for my 4 year old son for the summer. As I made my way through tables and tables of sports and outdoors camp and I was curious as to what a theatre could offer as a camp..especially for a four year old boy who thinks that soccer and Darth Vader sum up all that is good in life. Jessica, charming and energetic as always, spoke to me about all the activities and skills that Bennett would be exposed to at camp. I was sold, but I had one issue...Bennett was shy. Shy to the point where he won't even stand facing a person he doesn't know sometimes. Jessica convinced me that a shy boy would be no problem for her and I believed her. I signed him up and held my breath. Jessica was right! My husband did the first drop off and he said after 15 seconds of hiding in his coat he ran into the classroom and joined the other kids on the rug happily. When we picked him up he was excited, smiling and couldn't wait to tell me everything that he had done. He couldn't wait for the next day and double check with me that I had signed him up for the WHOLE week. Every day when I received Jessica's wonderful and detailed outlines of the day Bennett and I would read it together and he would be very proud to show off all he had learned. And no one in the audience today would have guessed that Bennett was shy! You will definitely be seeing Bennett again over the summer and I have already started spreading the word about this wonderful program you have. So thank you for having such a unique and educational program available for such young but capable children. But most of all, thank you for Jessica! She really made the whole experience special for Bennett and myself, from meeting her at the camp fair until this final performance. Kate Hilgenberg"

FAQ:

What’s the price of camp?

It is $375 per week.

Are there any discounts?

Yes, there is an early bird discount of $325 (through April 15th for June, July and August camps.).  There is also a twin discount of 10%. If you register twins, you pay $300 each.

What do kids do at camp?

They study with professional teaching artists as well as a drama therapist. Campers learn theatre games, choreography, vocal and creative movement skills. They even take class in set, lighting and costume design. On Friday, the camp culminates in a performance which combines improvisation, theatre games and a production number from one of Vital’s original musicals.

What if my kid is shy?

Our teaching artists have a huge arsenal of techniques to get even the most shy kid performing. We also have a 5-1 camper to counselor ratio so there are plenty of adults to give individual attention.

Does the 4-6 age range work?

Yes! We find that this specific age range works beautifully together. Any younger or older and it’s too large an age difference, but this range is just right!

Is each day the same?

While the schedule remains the same, (i.e. snack is at the same time every day), each day is different, as each day offers different exercises and games that build necessary theatre skills, leading towards Friday’s performance.

Can I register for more than one camp? Or is each week the same?

Each week features a different song from a different Vital production and also features a different design workshop. Your child can register for all camps and have a different experience each time.

When do camps run?

Camps for ages 4-6 run from 9am to 12pm Monday-Friday.

Where are the camps?
The camps are at St. Michael’s Church, 225 West 99th Street. This is a sunny, air- conditioned room with an adjoining child-sized bathroom.

Why aren’t the camps at Vital?

We find the room at St. Michaels more conducive to early childhood learning. Also, our theatre is often booked with our family programming.

Are there still spaces available? Should I sign up right away?

Yes! They should sign up right away because last year every single on of our camps sold out.

What is the counselor/camper ratio?

5 students to one counselor.

What is your maximum amount of campers?

20 is our limit. We like to create an intimate, personalized space for learning.

Am I still eligible for early bird? (Early Bird Rate: $325. Regular camp rate: $375)

The Early Bird deadline for June, July and August camps is April 15th, 2013.

What’s the refund policy?

Cancellation must be made three weeks in advance of camp in order to be fully refundable.

Do you offer scholarships?

We do. If you are interested in a scholarship for your child, please have them e-mail ed@vitaltheatre.org with an explanation of why you would like a scholarship and someone from the camp staff will get back to you.
