“FAITH,” by composer MICHAEL
CHING, is based on the short story by HUGO award-winning science fiction
writer and Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine columnist JAMES PATRICK KELLY.
This 1990’s romantic comedy tells the story of a divorced woman named Faith,
who, as she’s starting to date again, meets and falls for a man who can
talk to plants. Mr. Ching, the General/Artistic Director of Opera
Memphis, has had his operas performed by the companies of New Orleans,
Delaware, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Memphis. Next
year, his opera Buoso’s Ghost will be presented by Chicago Opera Theatre
in March and his Psyche & Eros will première at San Jose Chamber
Orchestra in May of 2000.
“CALIBAN,” by composer RUSSELL
CURRIE, is a monodrama based on the character from Shakespeare’s Tempest.
Mr. Currie is recognized as one of America’s more versatile composers,
whose works for film include the score for the Columbia TriStar picture
The Black Cat. His short pieces The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall
of the House of Usher will be performed at the Old Prague Palace as part
of The Edgar Allan Poe Festival in August. Mr. Currie is also planning
a production of Mackintosh, a new music theater piece based on the life
and times of the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which has
been commissioned by Scottish Television and Glasgow City Council.
“Caliban” was composed for RYAN ALLEN, who has sung at the Metropolitan
Opera, as well as with numerous opera companies and orchestras throughout
the U.S. and Europe. |
